VFD – Variable Frequency Drive
By varying the frequency and voltage of its power supply the VFD controls electric motors. It has the capacity to control ramp-up and ramp down during the start and stop process of the motor.
There are 3 main types of VFD’s, Current-Source Inverter (CSI), Pulse Width Modulation Inverter (PWM) and Voltage-Source Inverter (VSI). The VSI is the most widely used as a standard diode circuit gets a DC signal from the AC Signal while having an energy storing function.
VSD – Variable Speed Drives
By converting fixed frequency and voltage input to a variable frequency and voltage output the VSD controls an AC motors speed and torque. By controlling speed to match the load system performance can be greatly improved.
Frequency Converters
Are often used to control speed regulation of motors used to drive pumps and fans. It converts a current with one frequency into a current with another frequency, without usually effecting the voltage.
